Creating my opportunity.

If you’re new to my blog, first of all hello and welcome! My name is Katy and I’m so glad you’ve taken time to read my blog!

A little background on what I do for a living, I’m actually just starting creating a job for myself doing freelance social media. You can read about my new endeavor here.

I found a love for social media and the power small businesses have through utilizing their platforms and interacting with customers. I love using Twitter and Facebook as well as interacting with people, but their weren’t many positions for me out there. Considering a lot of small business owners don’t yet utilize these tools and don’t know how to find someone to perform those tasks, they weren’t posting these opportunities. I had to create my own opportunity.

A few weeks ago I officially decided to start doing freelance social media.

A lot of people have asked me to document my journey, since many people are interested in following a similar path, perhaps not with social media alone, but with their passions and dreams. I’m no expert, I’ve actually gotten help from some pretty wonderful friends whom I can’t thank enough! It’s not easy to create your own job, but I know it’s going along with the goals I have set for myself in the next few years and now is the right time to go for it.

So what’s been happening so far? I’ve sent out some proposals to interested clients and will be approaching a few more small businesses this week. I’ve gained a lot of interest through word of mouth alone, which is super encouraging and helps reinforce the fact that I’m where I’m supposed to be. One major lesson I’ve learned is to rein in my expectations. I expected and still hope to work mainly with coffee shops, restaurants and maybe some local wineries. Those types of small businesses. But the interest is coming from places I didn’t expect and companies I’m not super familiar with, but I’m following through with them. It’s way out of my comfort zone, but that’s where I’m going to grow the most. I’m going to be learning a ton and I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens!

The hardest part is the process of building up the clientele. The waiting period. I have my “up” days and “down” days. The “down” days are the hardest and I have to keep reminding myself that it’s going to happen, it won’t happen overnight and God is going to provide the right opportunities at the right time. I’ve seen it happen so many times before and I’m trusting it will this time as well!
